Author Talks & School Visits

As well as writing fiction, I present writing workshops and author talks for schools, clubs and writing groups. You can book me for a writing workshop or talk by contacting my agent at Creative Net (www.fordstreetpublishing.com/cnet).

Mostly I present in the Brisbane region, but can sometimes be tempted to wander further (try chocolate, that usually works). For interstate schools, I can run Skype writing workshops… or just send a cardboard cut out of myself.

These events can be tailored to suit your group, whether they be primary school children, high schoolers or adults. My workshops are always quite interactive as I encourage lots of audience participation. These are some of the events I offer:

All times for workshops can be altered to fit in with your schedule or class times.

How to write a scary story!Horror writing workshop

Activities, exercises and writing prompts. I share some of the insights to writing my children’s humorous horror story, My Zombie Dog, and take the writers through the steps to create relatable fears, suitably spooky settings and believable character motivations. Along the way, I share a little bit of the traditions and expectations of the horror genre.

Other workshops/talks

As an english teacher, I’m usually able to create a workshop to fit in with your curriculum. For writing groups I can also present on my process as a writer, setting up as a small print publisher, networking, marketing and many other aspects of the writing journey. I sometimes make little videos to encourage kids to write stories, here’s one on writing a mad scientist story:

Rates

Workshops costs are calculated using the base rates determined by the Australian Authors Association. Their schedule of fees can be found here:

https://asauthors.org/public-appearance-rates

*Encouraging literacy and creative expression in children is something I feel quite passionate about. As such, I am sometimes willing to offer my time freely to schools with students at risk, or in need. It is also possible to reduce fees by organising pre-orders of my books. If you’d love a school visit, speak to me, we can work something out for the kids.
